Abstract

Since the founding of the United Nations in 1945, the question of how to enable effective participation for individual citizens in its multiple and complex deliberative processes of global governance has posed a persistent problem. Scholars and practitioners alike have tried to confront these challenges, with practical solutions ranging from United Nations Associations and the “Major Groups” framework to scholarly solutions such as international regime theory to address the so-called Anarchy Problematique. The UN World Summit on the Information Society was critical in stimulating the participation of multiple civil society actors participating in these global governance processes via transnational networks. This chapter reviews the foundation for this wide-reaching book and concludes with an overview of the structure of the book.
