Abstract

Interior design, like any other design vertical, requires a great deal of brainstorming and mind mapping to arrive at innovative solutions. Design problems require detailed processes involving information collected from the environment, culture, background, requirements, and relative factors. Having a thorough and precise grasp of design problems allows for the formation of accurate design solutions. Many design verticals, from visual communication to interaction and animation design, have investigated the visual storytelling technique at different levels. Students have been using this method for problem-solving and sharing experiences. In the field of interior design, the utilization of space and its constituent parts greatly influences the experiences that users have. Every space has a story involving the user environment and activities. The design process involves a sequence of steps from defining a specific problem, collecting information, researching the history related to the design problem, ideating, prototyping the idea, selecting the best possible intervention, and eventually implementing it into a design solution. To make problem-solving easier, visual narratives can be included as one or more design process elements. There can be numerous ways of developing visual narratives to understand experiences, narrate activities, and visualize plausible arguments in a design brief. By using narrative, designers may acquire a broader perspective and a better understanding of developing concepts for the real world. The study makes an effort to investigate and comprehend the numerous representational strategies employed by interior design students while creating visual stories for the projects they are working on. The study establishes an opportunity for using these techniques in the design process. The approach involves selecting any part of the design problem, trying to analyze it, researching, and finding a solution using visual narratives.
