Abstract

Amitai Etzioni, who is dissatisfied with the liberal and individualist paradigm, has proposed a kind of responsive communitarianism which aims to achieve a carefully crafted equilibrium between the liberal and conservative paradigms, that is, an equilibrium between autonomy and order. His philosophy and policy suggestions have drawn fire from some liberals. For example, William Lund accuses Etzioni of not providing adequate protection of negative liberty. In this essay, I would like to reply to Lund’s criticisms of Etzioni’s communitarianism.
