Design and Production Engineers wish to know the magnitude of residual stresses throughout their fabricated components and weldments in order that they can estimate their maximum loading, fatigue life, etc. The technique of stress measurement using neutron diffraction is outlined, with its advantages and outstanding problems. The latter are emphasised as points for discussion. Its use in a number of cases, covering both practical and fundamental problems, is described.
