Abstract

This paper estimates a reduced form racial identity equation for a sample of African American survey respondents. The change in a state’s fraction of white votes for Obama in 2008 relative to Kerry in 2004 provides an empirical proxy for a change in white antagonism toward African Americans. Using Current Population Survey data from 2003 to 2013, this paper finds that there is a positive and statistically significant Obama-effect on African American self-identification as mixed-race rather than as black-alone.

1
Stewart uses the phrases “stock of race-cultural identity.” However, this phrase is intended only to emphasize that race is a social construction rather than a biological reality.

2
Faria et al. (2016) show that the actual effects of an affirmative action ban also depend on the bargaining power of minority groups within institutions.

3
“Multi-racial” is an imprecisely measured variable in both the Contreras and Antman and Duncan studies. For example, Contreras defines “multiracial” as a fourteen year-old whose racial identity differs from the survey respondent, probably the child’s mother. A 14 year old whose racial self-identity is the same as his/her mother will not be coded as “multiracial,” even though father’s racial identity may differ from the child. By contrast, Antman and Duncan uses the historical country of origin the respondent’s parents to determine multiracial identity. But, this definition does not consider that many countries have diverse racial populations.

4
The Stephen-Davidowitz (2013) racially charged index ranges from 0 to 100. The numerator in the index is the fraction of racially charged searches in an area relative to all searches within the same area. The denominator is the area with the highest relative fraction of racially charged searches. So, the area with the highest relative fraction of searches will have an index of 100 (West Virginia), while the area with the lowest relative fraction of searches will have an index of 30 (Utah). This paper converts the Stephens-Davidowitz index to deviations from the mean. See Stephen-Davidowitz (2013), Appendix 1 for all state measures of racially charged searches.

5
Texas, California, Florida, and Washington established bans on affirmative action several years before the 2008 election. This list of states was taken from Antman and Duncan.
