Despite billions of US dollars invested over the last 17 years, or so, to develop self-driving technology substantial returns on those investments won't be realized anytime soon. Investors are losing faith. Lidar is an essential component in self-driving systems, a necessary complement to cameras and radar. It is similar to a camera but provides its own illumination and sees in 3 D. It can reliably detect the size of and distance to obstacles. It can detect pedestrians in pitch dark.
