‘When we were in Estonia, we were astonished by the high standard of living, order and economic activity, which was quite contrary to the conditions in the European parts of Russia. We drove our own car from Moscow to Estonia and were caught by surprise already where the roads that were in poor condition and without repairs for years suddenly changed for better right after Pihkova. We saw small, but well-tended, farms quite far apart from one another, and farmers cutting the hay with their own mowers for their own cows, usually a few in each farm, and we saw the farmers ploughing their fields with their own tractors. Milk churns waited by the roads in small sheds for the cars to pick them up to the dairy.
