Abstract

The World Scientists’ Warning to Humanity, signed by some 1,700 of the world’s leading scientists (with 102 Nobel laureates, including the majority of Nobel laureates in the sciences), declares: “Human beings and the natural world are on a collision course”, (UCS (Union of Concerned Scientists). World scientists’ warning to humanity. UCS Publications, Cambridge, 1992). The information regarding the process of collision and its seriousness is overwhelming. Consequently, the warnings about the urgency of change multiply. However, the vast information that we dispose of with regards to the seriousness of the collision process and of the first tangible signs of its impact has not produced any significant policy changes. Numerous reasons can be put forward for this: society’s inertia, the relative shortness of politicians’ terms in office, a partial knowledge of the issues at hand, etc. Yet the ultimate cause is the web of beliefs and worldviews, this is, the dominant paradigm.
