Paroxysmal Atrial Fibrillation Termination Prognosis through the Application of Generalized Hurst Exponents

This work evaluates the use of the Generalized Hurst Exponents (
H
(

)) in the prediction of paroxysmal atrial fibrillation (PAF) spontaneous termination from surface electrocardiographic recordings. Although atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common supraventricular tachyarrhythmia, the mechanisms leading to its spontaneous termination are yet not fully explained. Hurst Exponents,
H
(
q
), measure the existence of long-term statistical dependencies in a time series. Therefore, they could provide an estimation of the atrial activity organization during PAF. Since the likelihood of PAF spontaneous termination relates to AF organization,
H
(
q
) might predict PAF termination.
H
(
q
) has been applied to the prediction of PAF termination using a reference database to allow an easy comparison with previous works. Two established AF organization estimators, the Dominant Atrial Frequency (DAF) and Sample Entropy (SampEn), have been used as a reference.
H
(
q
) reached an accuracy of 95.0% in the prediction of PAF termination, thus yielding better results than DAF and SampEn (both obtaining 88.3% accuracy). As a consequence,

q
) could be considered as a promising tool for the prediction of PAF termination.
