This research presents a development work in the effort to produce a three leads ECG data acquisition system that is suitable for use at home and for transmitting ECG data over Internet. The system consists of an ECG recorder hardware that is used as a computer peripheral connected to the computer via RS-232 port and software written to display the real-time ECG data with Internet options. The recorder hardware performs amplification, proper filtering and analogue-to-digital conversion to the ECG signal. An eight-bit micro-controller is used to control the hardware and to communicate with the computer. The hardware is a battery-powered device and its design is emphasis on low power consumption. The development of the ECG recorder is aimed to use with hand-held computer (wireless Internet) such as a palm top device with RS-232 port. The ECG signal is over sampled at 12-bits of 500 samples per second to improve its fidelity. The software was written in Visual C++ programming language. The software provides a graphical user interface (GUI), which help general user to work with this system. It can communicate with the hardware to control its recording process and to monitor its battery status. The software can display the recording ECG signal in real-time while recording is in process. Beside that, it detects the present of the R-wave and calculates the current heartbeat and RR-interval. There are five steps ECG information zooming facility for proper viewing. To make it easy to transmit over Internet, loss-less compression is performed to the ECG data before it is saved in a file. The software includes a command to send the recorded ECG file including patient information via e-mail. These make the device an Internet appliance for electrocardiogram (ECG).
