The emissions limits recently agreed for the years 2015 and 2020 call for ambitious technical progress. In recent years, one of the focal points of development work has been on compliance with the strict EU5 and EU6 emissions standards. Following the introduction of this CO2 legislation, the main thrust of development work for modern vehicles is now on reducing fuel consumption. Today’s automakers are looking beyond 2015’s 130 g/km CO2 limit; they have their sights fixed on 2020 and the 95 g/km CO2 limit that has now been set for that year. Both these target values call for additional technical measures to bring fleet CO2 emissions in line with the targets set. As a result, development work is focused on systems solutions that will deliver compliance with future emissions legislation after 2015.
