Fluid-rock interaction plays one of the key roles in crustal dynamic processes. Crustal fluids and their hydrodynamics decisively control or influence the deformation of minerals, rocks, and the crust on all scales, i. e., from individual grains up to plate tectonics, prograde and retrograde metamorphism, melt formation, convective energy and mass transport, electrical resistivity, seismic characteristics of the crust, the circulation of subducted water and other fluids back into the upper crust, and degassing of the lower crust and mantle. Therefore, research programs dealing with the permeability of the crystalline crust, especially the permeation of water, are given high priority in the KTB.
