Due to the regulations requiring reduced pollutant emissions and fuel consumption, engines and emission control systems are becoming increasingly complex. At the same time, consumers are demanding reduced cost and increased product reliability and robustness. To simplify emissions development, Southwest Research Institute has established a new exhaust composition transient operation laboratory. It is a computer-controlled multi-fueled, burner-based continuous flow reactor system designed to duplicate the exhaust conditions from internal combustion engines. Essentially, the system functions as a physical exhaust gas simulation system which replicates the exhaust gas stream from an infinite number of engines and combustion systems. …
