As the second volume of the "Digital Oil & Gas Pipeline: Research and Practice" series of monographs, this book introduces the implementation strategies, examples and technical roadmaps of two important aspects of the Digital Oil & Gas Pipeline construction: pipeline real-time data integration and pipeline network virtual reality system. Two example of pipeline real-time data integration are elaborated: integration of pipeline WebGIS (Geographic Information System) and pipeline SCADA (Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition) via OPC (OLE for Process Control) technology, integration of pipeline network virtual reality system and pipeline SCADA via OPC, JNI (Java Native Interface) and SAI (Scene Access Interface). The pipeline network virtual reality system aims for the pipeline virtual expression, interaction, and 3D visual management. It can be used for pipeline route visual design and plan, immersive pipeline industry training, remote visual supervision and control, etc. The implementation details of the pipeline network virtual reality system, including 3D pipeline and terrain modeling with X3D (Extensible 3D) technology, improving large-scene display performance and speed in the network environment using LOD (Level of Detail) technology, interaction of virtual pipeline scenes, and pipeline 3D visual monitoring, are also introduced. The knowledge and experience delivered by this book will provide useful reference for the readers from the industries of oil & gas pipeline, GIS, Virtual Reality, industrial control, etc.

Abstract
This chapter introduces the significance of the pipeline real-time data integration for the pipeline enterprises. The internal demands for the pipeline real-time data integration and the construction of the Management-Control Integration System application is discussed. The OPC technology and its role in the pipeline real-time data integration as well as the roles of the pipeline network virtual reality system in pipeline operation and management are studied. Finally, the key research issues of the pipeline network virtual reality system are introduced.

Chapter 3. Integration of Pipeline SCADA and Pipeline WebGIS Based on OPC

Abstract
Based on the analysis and comparison of the main methods of current pipeline SCADA and GIS integration, an OPC-based pipeline SCADA and GIS integration method is proposed. A custom data access component is developed with OPC interfaces to implement the real-time data accessing to the SCADA system and the real-time data transfer to the Pipeline Spatial Data Model (PSDM).

Chapter 4. The Related Technologies for the Pipeline Network Virtual Reality System

Abstract
The related technologies which are prepared for the implementation of the pipeline network virtual reality system are introduced. These technologies include virtual reality, visualization in scientific computing and geographic information, 3D Geographic Information System (3D GIS), Virtual Reality Geographic Information System (VRGIS), and Web Virtual Reality GIS. This chapter looks into the implementation technologies for traditional desktop virtual reality system and their limitations. Specific research is conducted on X3D and its interactivity including, the characteristics of X3D compared to other web 3D technologies, the development tools of X3D - Xj3D, X3D Scene Access Interface (SAI) and its development methods, X3D internal interaction, and the interaction between X3D virtual scenes and Java applications.

Chapter 5. Implementation of the Pipeline Network Virtual Reality System

Abstract
The pipeline network virtual reality system is an important part of the Digital Pipeline construction. Its main purpose is to build a network-based, interactive 3D dynamic virtual pipeline to realize web 3D visualization and virtual reality representation of the pipelines. The main research areas of this chapter include large-scene roaming of pipelines, virtual facility modeling, and 3D visual monitoring. Specific research is conducted on 3D terrain modeling, terrain model texture mapping, network virtual reality geographic information system construction schemes, methods for improving performance and speed of large-scene 3D terrain browsing in the network environment, interaction methods of virtual scenes and external programs, pipeline 3D visual monitoring through interaction of virtual facilities and pipeline SCADA system, etc. This chapter also discusses the methods of the interaction between the pipeline network virtual reality system and the pipeline WebGIS at the data level and the UI level.
