Intracellular delivery system may benefit from various types of cages ranging in diameter from 30 nm to several micrometers. Broad ranges of materials serve as building blocks for such compartments. Polymer capsules may provide a distinct chemical environment protecting the capsule interior from potentially hostile exterior environment. Bringing such functionalized compartments inside cells for detection, delivery sampling or retrieval of molecules is tempting. Electroporation is the method of choice for general intracellular delivery of small molecules, whereas for micrometer-sized capsules this is not obvious. Previously we have shown that electroporation promotes endocytosis bringing micrometer sized capsules into the endosome and allow for slow escape within a few hours.
