Der einführende Beitrag geht auf bestehende theoretische Konzepte von Populismus ein und arbeitet anschließend wesentliche Merkmale populistischen Regierungshandelns heraus. Darauf aufbauend wird sich auf den theoretischen Rahmen von Takis Pappas bezogen, der die vergleichende Analyse von Populisten an der Macht ermöglicht. Zudem wird auf erste empirische Herangehensweisen an das Phänomen eingegangen und eine kurze Einführung in die Beiträge des Sammelbandes gegeben.

Entgegen der allgemein in diesem Buch verwendeten gendersensiblen Sprache haben wir uns dazu entschieden, bei dem Wort „Populist“ auf das Gendern zu verzichten. Dies hat den Grund, das Populisten in der Regel männlich sind. Nicht selten geht der Kult um den populistischen Anführer gar einher mit der Betonung seiner Maskulinität. Das soll freilich nicht heißen, dass es nicht auch Populistinnen gibt, wie etwa Marine Le Pen, Alice Weidel oder Sarah Palin. In unserem Diskussionskontext von Populismus an der Macht sind Beispiele von Populistinnen an der Macht aber eher die Ausnahme. Zu nennen wären etwa Cristina Fernández de Kirchner in Argentinien, und, wenn man sie als populistisch einstuft, Indira Gandhi, Siv Jensen, die Vorsitzende der Norwegischen Fortschrittspartei und Ministerin in einer Koalitionsregierung 2013 bis 2020, oder Beata Szydlo, polnische Ministerpräsidentin 2015 bis 2017, von der PiS.

Die zugrundeliegenden Schriften Webers wurden nach seinem Tod von seiner Frau herausgegeben. Ein genaues Datum kann nur vermutet werden. Aufgrund verschiedener Indikatoren kann von der Verfassung der verschiedenen Texte in den 1910er Jahren ausgegangen werden. Die Datumsangabe in dieser Arbeit bezieht sich auf die veröffentlichte Gesamtausgabe (2019), wie sie im Literaturverzeichnis angegeben ist.
