The information contained in this chapter was first presented in a paper of the DIN Computer Graphics group [ENDE 81], based on work done by the ANSI Computer Graphics group ANSC X3H3. It was later included in the GKS draft standard in order to offer explanations and justifications for design decisions taken during the development of GKS. GKS was designed to provide a set of functions for computer graphics programming which can be used in the majority of applications that produce computer generated pictures.
