Volvo intends to develop the next generation of self-driving cars together with the online ride-sharing company Uber. The model, to be manufactured by Volvo, is to be based on the scalable product architecture (SPA), which provides the platform for the current Volvo 90 series based around the SUV model Volvo CX90 and the recently launched limousine Volvo S90. According to Volvo, the modular platform has encompassed from day one alternative powertrain designs such as electrification and technologies, in particular connectivity and autonomous driving: Features that drew Uber’s focus to the Swedish carmaker. The engineers from both companies will work together closely to transfer the required safety systems, redundancies and other features peculiar to autonomous driving onto the SPA platform. The cooperation partners report that both Volvo and Uber want to use the base vehicle for their respective strategies. …
