Daimler has launched a new headlight technology known as Digital Light. Each headlamp consists of more than 1 million micromirrors, which are animated by high-current light-emitting diodes and can be moved individually. The algorithm that controls the lights receives information from the vehicle’s sensors about its surroundings and uses this to calculate the brightness value for each micromirror in real time. This makes it possible to achieve the ideal light distribution for every driving situation and also to provide guidance and support for the driver in critical situations, such as narrow roadworks. In addition, the headlight system will be able to project beams of light onto the road to replace missing road markings, plus messages such as direction arrows or warnings. In future, it will be possible for the car to communicate with other road users, for example, by displaying symbols such as a zebra crossing for pedestrians on the road surface. Daimler has several demonstration vehicles using prototypes of the system. The new technology will be used in two hardware headlight systems in future. …
