CTsystems, a spin-off of the Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology (Empa), and the sealing solutions specialist Dätwyler have developed the prototype of an electromechanical stacked polymer transducer. It consists of a large number of thin stacked layers of elastomer which are coated with special electrodes, can be easily shaped, and enable electrical energy to be converted into mechanical work. The potential applications of the transducer in the automotive industry include pumps, valves, vehicle locks, haptic feedback systems, switches, and seat adjusters. The benefits of the new technology are its robust design, low energy consumption, lack of complex mechanical parts, and silent operation with an accompanying sensor function. …
