Continental has developed a combined camera system known as "Road and Driver" which creates a holistic model of the environment for automated driving. An outward-looking camera and an interior camera monitor both the traffic and the driver. By combining and evaluating the data from the two cameras, it will be possible to safely transfer the responsibility for driving. The camera system is positioned as normal on the windshield of the vehicle above the rear-view mirror. While the outward-looking camera monitors the traffic in front of the vehicle, the interior camera identifies the position of the driver's body and hands and determines whether he or she is being distracted. In addition to managing the transition between "automated" and "manual" driving modes, the cameras are also responsible for adapting passive safety systems, for example, by deploying the airbags in the way that is best suited to the situation in the interior. The start of volume production is planned for 2021.
