Mercedes-Benz is working with the district of Zollernalb in Baden-Württemberg in southern Germany to evaluate how safety on wintry roads and the efficiency of municipal winter services can be improved with car-to-X communication. Car-to-X is the term used to describe communication between vehicles and with the transport infrastructure. Mercedes-Benz cars equipped with car-to-X technology whose owners have activated the Live Traffic service will provide the data needed during the pilot tests. Once the ESP or ABS sensors of these vehicles have identified that the roads are slippery, this information and the GPS data will be sent to the Daimler Vehicle Backend in real time via the mobile communications network. This anonymized information will be displayed on digital maps in the two road maintenance depots of the Zollernalb district in real time. In the future this will make it possible for the municipality to provide a more effective winter service and improve its use of road salt. Public service vehicles, such as police cars, and vehicle fleets will be included in the next stage of the project. The pilot test will start in January 2020 and continue until the end of winter. In addition to improving traffic safety, the project could also help to protect the environment, because the more targeted application of road salt will mean that less is used.
