BMW is equipping the new M3 and M4 with more powerful engines and offers the sports models with both eight-speed automatic and six-speed manual transmissions. The 3.0-l in-line six-cylinder gasoline engine used (stroke × bore: 90 × 84 mm, compression ratio: 9.3 : 1) with two mono-scroll turbochargers and indirect intercooling produces a maximum of 353 kW at 6250 rpm and 550 Nm (2650 to 6130 rpm) in the standard version, an increase in output of 36 kW at the same torque. In the M3 and M4 Competition, up to 375 kW (6250 rpm) and 650 Nm torque (2750 to 5500 rpm) are available, 44 kW and 100 Nm more than the predecessor. Direct gasoline injection with a maximum pressure of 350 bar is intended to improve power delivery and torque. A cooling system with an additional engine oil cooler and separate transmission oil cooler on the Competition ensures optimum operating temperatures at all times.
