Magna's Icon radar system will debut in the Fisker Ocean electric SUV in 2022. The digital radar is designed to enable automated driving to progress from SAE level 3 to level 5. Icon continuously scans the environment in four dimensions (height, width, depth and speed) and can detect a pedestrian 150 m away. Compared to current systems, it is said to be able to detect and classify 100 times more objects. In addition to moving objects such as vehicles, bicyclists, pedestrians and animals, the system will also detect and report static objects such as guardrails, road damage and speed bumps. Image processing is fed by 192 virtual receivers that provide horizontal and vertical resolution. The system is also said to exhibit very good tolerance to interfering signals due to a high number of unique codes. The Icon radar was developed as a single-chip radar solution together with the technology start-up Uhnder, which specializes in engineering and product development of stealth technologies.
