Recent developments on a system of programmes for the design and manufacture of hot forging dies are outlined, as follows:- a)Programmes for the manufacture of EDM electrodes for finishing die impressions based on a geometric description of the forging as combinations of simple volumetric modules. The volumetric modules are merged together during generation of the N.C. tape necessary to machine the EDM electrode for the whole forging cavity. This system allows quite complex forging shapes to be produced from relatively few simple input instructions. The system may be used also for the generation of cross sectional data which serves as input to subsequent preform design programmes.b)A system for the design and manufacture of forging rolls, including interactive determination of the roll pass profiles. Subsequent to the design process, N.C. tapes are prepared for either an EDM electrode for the roll cavity or for a pattern to enable the cavity to be produced, by copy milling.
