Über dieses Buch

This is a different kind of book on project management. Using a narrative tone, humor and personal anecdotes, the author highlights the significant gaps in current project management theory as well as disparities within project management practice. This book then provides managers with new models for project management and value creation using chaos and complexity theories, systems thinking and quantum mechanics to explore a more holistic view of project management. Drawing on these bodies of knowledge, the author proposes the existence of an ecosystem that surrounds projects, explains how the project and its ecosystem are distinct, but co-dependent entities, and shows why both need to be managed using very different competencies.

Frontmatter
1. The Elephant
Abstract
The purpose of this book is to challenge the way you think about project management. It will not make you better at scheduling or cost planning – but it might make you ask whether we should do these things. This book turns a spotlight on gaping holes in the current project management theory, and challenges you to think about project management in a whole new way. If you don’t know why the Project Management Elephant, Eco-system and Experience are important, then this is the book for you.

2. The Eco-System
Abstract
Now that you are familiar with the problems associated with production management theory, the idea of phenomenological value, value co-creation and elephants, I think it’s time to introduce you to a new model for project management.

3. The Project
Abstract
Now that we have established that there is something that exists outside a project, I guess it’s time to start having a look at the idea of what a project really is. You will recall that I have already debunked the ideas of ‘unique’ and ‘temporary’ as terms that should be incorporated into the definition of a project. So I guess I’d better come up with something new.

4. The Experience
Abstract
Now that we have discussed the elephant and the eco-system, it’s time to move onto what I believe could be the most important aspect of project management—the experience.

5. Closing Thoughts
Abstract
Throughout this book, I have done my best to undermine your current understanding of project management theory and practice. I’ve shown you the holes in traditional project management theory and how they got there. I’ve explained why the current definition of project management is woefully inadequate. And I’ve done my best to show you that project management is about so much more than just ‘managing projects’—it’s also about the project eco-system and a value co-creation experience, both of which seem to be completely ignored in most project management literature and education.
