Abstract

Over the last decade, nanostructured zirconium oxide (ZrO2) has emerged as a versatile and promising material in biomedical field due to its biocompatibility and excellent physicochemical properties. It has also provided a high surface-to-volume ratio, chemical inertness, thermal stability, excellent electrical, surface charge properties, and affinity for the groups containing oxygen. ZrO2 also exhibits suitable surface chemistry that enhances the high affinity toward the interaction of verities of biomolecules with desired orientation. This chapter extensively focuses on synthesis, characterization, structure of ZrO2, and their composite with other inorganic and organic materials. And the interaction studies of ZrO2 with different biomolecules including enzymes, antibodies, DNA for the development of electrochemical biosensors for point-of-care diagnostics are discussed in details.
