Abstract

Mass demonstrations have led to violent police action, for instance in France, and now Boris Johnson has promised more police and a large increase in prison places in the UK. All of this points to an increase in both collective action for progressive change, and in authoritarian methods of social control, to deal with the social consequences of increased inequality. Authoritarian regimes have few qualms about using overt repression to impose their versions of order on societies in disintegration.
