I am often asked by present students of the earth sciences “what will I be doing by the year 2000 — do I have a future?” They are concerned about our changing technologies which at first sight place lower demands on conventional earth resources. They have heard about the glut of resources on world markets, things like copper and even oil and gas. I find this strange for I am convinced that earth scientists are and will be needed as never before. But it will be a geologist prepared to face new challenges and problems not common at present.
