1 Editorial status report

The year 2023 was a remarkable year for the Journal of Management Control. We achieved new record of submission numbers, and increased our geographical spread in the area of management accounting and control. Some key figures summarize this development:
Total submissions: 225.
Growth submissions since 2019:  + 76%.
Days between submission and first decision: 42.
Countries of corresponding authors: 53.
Total reviewers: 253.
Countries of reviewers: 30.
Total downloads: 243,910.
Growth in downloads since 2019:  + 254%.
Journal impact factor (2023): 2.1.
5-year impact factor (2023): 3.0.
CiteScore (2023): 3.6.
The average time between the receipt of the manuscript and the first decision (submission to first decision) is only 42 days and fairly stable over the years. While we aim for a fast decision, we do not want to further drive down this relative low response time for the first decision. That is, we want to encourage and enable reviewers to thoroughly review a paper without too much time pressure, and allow editors to make solid final decisions which are helpful for authors to further develop their papers. The rejection rate is 83% and relatively stable over the years, indicating the high standards of our journal and the rigor in our review processes.
The Journal of Management Control is currently covered by the following abstracting and indexing services:
ABS Academic Journal Quality Guide, ANVUR, Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) Journal Quality List, BFI List, Baidu, CLOCKSS, CNKI, CNPIEC, Dimensions, EBSCO, Emerging Sources Citation Index, Google Scholar, Naver, OCLC WorldCatDiscovery Service, Portico, ProQuest, Research Papers in Economics (RePEc), SCImago, SCOPUS, TD Net Discovery Service, UGC-CARE List (India), Wanfang.

In spring 2024, we were informed that the Journal of Management Control was upgraded in the recent VHB PMR-rating 2024 of the German Academic Association for Business Research to a B-journal. This adds to the upgradings in 2023 to an A-journal by the Australian Business Deans Council (ABDC) and by the Italian Board of Directors of the Accademia Italiana di Economia Aziendale (AIDEA) that recommended that the Journal of Management Control should be on the list of foreign journals that they deem highly qualified (authoritative) in their respective scientific domains.
We are grateful for the recognition of the Journal of Management Control in these prestigious rankings, and hope that the recognition by these institutions will further increase the circulation of the journal in the scientific community.

5 Special issues

Following the highly successful special issues on ‘Courageous Risk Governance: Enabling Resilience, Autonomy, and New Thinking’ and ‘Experiments, Replications and the Advancement of Management Accounting and Control Research’ that have recently been published, the editorial board decided to initiate more special issues that focus on areas which are currently at the core of management accounting and control research. In the upcoming years, there are three other special issues coming up (listed in order of deadlines) with their own editorial teams (that includes at least one member of the editorial board of the Journal of Management Control):
  • The Impact of Digital Technology on Management Accounting and Control;
  • Management Control Research on Sustainability;
  • Rising Tide of Operational Risks: Management Controls for Better Risk Management.
The special issues attract a high number of submissions (which also results in substantial work load for the special issue editors; we highly appreciate their efforts!). The editorial board is discussing other special issues for the upcoming years, and is open to suggestions from our readers.

6 Closing words

The Journal of Management Control has experienced a remarkable development in the number of paper submissions and download figures since 2019. The editors and the publisher would like to conclude this editorial by expressing our warmest gratitude to all authors, readers, and reviewers of our journal who have contributed to this success. We are looking forward to your submissions and reviews in the years to come!
