Technologies Developed For Dismantling Batteries And E-Motors

The twelve partners of the DeMoBat research project, which will be completed in April 2023, have developed technologies for the industrial dismantling of electric car batteries and motors.

The partners' goal was to generate as little waste as possible during disassembly and to be able to reuse a high proportion of the raw materials used. As part of the project, the partners developed, among other things, a recommended course of action for a recycling-friendly design of batteries, with which batteries can be easily repaired or dismantled manually or robotically.

A total of 25 technologies for the non-destructive dismantling of batteries down to the cell level have been developed in the project, eight of which are already fully applicable for continuous industrial operation. The technologies include a robot-based demonstrator that tests batteries for remaining capacity and signs of age. Specially developed tools combined with powerful image processing grip objects during disassembly and loosen screws and other connections.

Electrode coating recovered efficiently

Part of the value-adding cycle developed is also water-based recycling, with which black mass can be recovered directly. Cell components are first opened and separated in a semi-automated process, after which the electrode coating is removed from the carrier films using a high-pressure water jet. According to the research partners, this reduces the greenhouse potential in the production of the recyclate by a factor of 10 to 20.

The project also developed technologies for industrial robots with special tools for the automated disassembly of electric drive units, which also act together with image processing systems. In addition to the project leader Fraunhofer IPA, research partners included the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and the companies Mercedes Benz, Siemens and ACP Systems.
