Abstract

In keeping with the commitment to reflect the subjective understanding of prisoners about their sentence, this chapter canvasses the range of issues posed by imprisonment which relate to interpersonal factors. Interviewees highlighted the importance of relationships with others – prisoners, prison staff and family in particular – as crucial aspects of their ability to serve their sentence in keeping with the expectations of the sentence. Other aspects of personal identity such as ethnicity and sexuality are also canvassed briefly as a way of highlighting the lack of research and theorising in these areas despite the evidence that they are important factors in prisoner’s experience of imprisonment.

Crewe, however, does not consider his own position as a male researcher as relevant to the types of attitudes expressed about female staff. The enactment of masculinity goes on between interviewer and interviewee, as much as between prisoner and staff member.

2
The suggestion by Donovan et al. that the condoms handed out in prison were mainly valued for the use of the lubricant as free hair gel was supported by one of the prisoners interviewed for this book.
