Über dieses Buch

Traditional resident travel surveys have limited the development of traffic planning theory and traffic model technology. Although mobile phone signaling data has been widely used to analyze macro urban travel characteristics, travel patterns, and travel behavior due to the advantages such as wide coverage, dynamic performance, and low collection costs, its potential and reliability in collecting individual travel chain information lacked demonstration and consensus.

This book aims to explore a set of methods to extract travel chain information based on the intensive base station under 4G/5G mobile communication network systems. It then verifies the reliability of constructed models from multiple perspectives by integrating empirical research and simulation technologies. Finally, it analyzes the influence of reliability on engineering practice from the perspective of traffic models. By demonstrating the availability of travel information extraction technology, this book provides a systematic and objective reference for traffic practitioners, which enhances their trust in related big data analysis technologies in traffic engineering. It also provides a solid foundation for optimizing and reconstructing theoretical traffic models, urban traffic planning, management, and decision-making.

This book helps traffic engineering researchers, technicians, and managers better understand the difficulties and challenges associated with the application of signaling data. It also helps them better evaluate the impact of existing data types and extraction methods on the four-step method, and adapt to changes in traffic demand and technological environment to achieve theoretical innovation and technological reform.

Chapter 1. Introduction
Abstract
China’s cities have gradually shifted from a stage of large construction to large governance. Data quality bottlenecks such as subjective ambiguity and data sloppiness caused by the drawbacks of traditional household travel surveys make it difficult to meet the analytical needs of managing complex traffic problems in the new era. Therefore, finer and higher-quality data support is needed. Analysis based on mobile phone signaling data can support traffic planning and management decision-making.

Chapter 2. Review of Mobile Phone Data in Travel Characteristics Recognition
Abstract
This chapter provides a systematic review of the evolutionary history and developmental stages of mobile phone signaling data analysis technologies.

Chapter 3. Principle and Feature of Mobile Phone Signaling Data
Abstract
The mobile phone signaling data is the interaction between the mobile terminal and the mobile communication network. Therefore, its quality is closely related to the network evolution. This chapter introduced the mobile communication principle, including the architecture and core technology of 4G-LTE mobile communication, the generation principle of mobile phone signaling data, and the parameters of communication base station. After that, the characteristics of 4G/5G mobile phone signaling data are researched, such as the base station density, data volume, interaction time distribution, positioning frequency, and positioning accuracy. Finally, the chapter comprehensively evaluates the positioning quality of signaling data by analyzing the feasibility and possibility of the identification of individual travel information.

Chapter 4. Individual Travel Chain Characteristics Recognition and Experimental System Design
Abstract
Reasonable and effective recognition algorithm of travel chain characteristics is the basis of reliability analysis. In this chapter, a more effective recognition system of travel chain is proposed based on the existing recognition technology. Then the design mechanism and process of synchronous acquisition experiment are introduced, and the mobile phone signaling data for the demonstration is collected. Finally, the “communication-traffic” integrated simulation platform is introduced to analysis the identification sensitivity under different influencing factors.

Chapter 5. Empirical Study on Travel Chain Characteristics Recognition by Mobile Phone Signaling Data
Abstract
The empirical assessment of recognition reliability of the traffic information is crucial for extraction algorithms. This chapter focuses on the empirically evaluation of travel endpoints, modes, and paths by an experimental design framework, including algorithm parameter settings and the recognition reliability.

Chapter 6. Influence of Analysis Reliability on Traffic Applications Based on Mobile Phone Signaling Data
Abstract
The recognition reliability of travel chain characteristics will influence the accuracy and rationality of data application, such as the OD distribution and travel structure. These characteristics are the basis of traffic models construction and conducting traffic demand analysis. The reliability of individual travel chain characteristics recognition technology will indirectly affect the results scientific of traffic model prediction or traffic demand analysis, thereby affecting the rationality of traffic planning and management decisions. Therefore, the improvement of recognition reliability shows great significance for travel model prediction, traffic demand analysis, and the rationality of traffic planning.

Chapter 7. Sensitivity Analysis Based on “Communication-Traffic” Integrated Simulation
Abstract
The sensitivity of identification effects under various influencing factors is an important manifestation of technical reliability. In this chapter, relying on real mobile phone handoff protocols and control guidelines, a simulation platform system and verification methods are proposed for integrated human flow, traffic flow, and communication signal under controllable travel environments and system parameters. The platform breaks through the limitations of real-world environments where it is difficult to adjust communication network parameters and layouts for empirical research.

Chapter 8. Outlook
Abstract
Mobile phone signaling data is expected to be comprehensive, dynamic, wide-area information to track individual travel chain information in traffic big data. However, these analyses still lack sufficient empirical research on reliability, which results in deviation from the real situation, and even decision-making errors. Therefore, related technologies also have not formed a consensus in the industry for a long time, and cannot be widely adopted by the government as a credible basis. In the long run, it will be difficult to deeply support the research of traffic model theories and traffic governance decisions.
