Abstract

This Chapter presents an overview of practical applications of remote sensing in forest inventory and planning. Satellite data and aerial photographs are the most commonly used data sources; Lidar is yet in the research stage. For interpretation, both visual and /or digital image processing techniques are being used. The correlation between remote sensing and field based measurements of height, crown density and volume per ha based on aerial photo-interpretation is described in order to set the limits of what data can be obtained with the help of remote sensing. Finally, a case study of method and accuracy of nationwide forest classification and mapping using Indian Remote Sensing Satellite data is presented to serve as an example.
