Robust and lightweight steel-aluminum composite components can help to reduce the weight of vehicles and cut emissions. The Laser Zentrum Hannover (LZH) has developed processes for joining composites made from two or three sheets of metal at welding speeds of up to seven meters/minute, which allows them to be used in volume production in the automotive industry. The remote laser welding process is based on a 3-D scanner optic developed by Trumpf Laser GmbH. This makes it possible to create complex three-dimensional seams even on large structures. The process is therefore ideal for building vehicle bodies and can replace complicated robot movements. The weld joints have a shear tensile strength of around 67 % of the aluminum alloy. When three weld seams are arranged in parallel, this figure increases to 95 %.
