Emilio Spadola’s ethnography examines how different facets of contemporary Islam in Morocco compete for legitimacy, both in local contexts and on the national stage. In particular, he explores the tension between longstanding traditions such as saint veneration and the management of spirit possession on the one hand, and Qur’anic-based Islamist exorcisms on the other, practices of more recent import to Morocco. Set in the medina of Fez, “in underclass and struggling middle class neighborhoods,” (p. 2) the ethnography also highlights the divisions among social classes as different spiritual authorities compete for religious legitimacy and the loyalty of the population. …
