In projection radiography stations image quality is enhanced by using anti-scatter grids that improve image contrast but form specific patterns that may be visible or may cause Moiré effect when digital image is resized on a diagnostic monitor. In this paper a robust, efficient and fully automated grid pattern recognition and elimination algorithm is proposed which is still an actual problem especially in computer aided diagnosis. The pattern recognition is based on statistical approach in both spatial and frequency domains and provides features extracted for the elimination stage. The pattern suppression is based on a 2-D filter approach preserving diagnostic quality of the image. Experimental results and advantages over existing approaches are discussed.
