Excerpt

Chisel-type hand crafts are one of the first hand tools of mankind. Additionally, they were used on early rock excavation machines as cutting tools when mechanical excavation machines had been newly developed. Since they had rather simpler geometrical shape, especially the simple-shaped ones, they provided a better understanding of rock cutting mechanism and led to the development of the rock cutting theories (Evans 1958; Potts and Shuttleworth 1959). …
