Abstract

Over the past few decades, mechanism and machine science has helped lay a very solid foundation for the topological representation of mechanisms and linkages. This has allowed the sorting and classification of industrial devices and machinery based on topological structure. This has been most useful for developing a sound understanding of the possible mechanism-based solutions for a given engineering problem. It has also allowed the exploration of novel solutions wherein an understanding of the degrees-of-freedom necessary to accomplish a particular set of functions has guided the search for new devices. In the present offering, we describe the use of this approach for the creation of novel gear schemes for automotive transmissions and hybrid drive units.
