Automated driving will have an impact on occupant safety and vice versa. The new freedom of movement that will be enjoyed by car occupants will increase the focus on airbags and safety belts that are integrated into seats. In the ATZ interview, Michael Büchsner, the Head of the newly created Passive Safety System Division at ZF, discusses the factors that need to be taken into consideration in designing the interior of autonomous cars and explains the progress being made in the field of occupant detection.
Dr. Michael Büchsner (born in 1975) is Executive Vice President at ZF and Head of ZF's Passive Safety Systems Division that was newly created in October 2018. Furthermore, he is Chairman of the Supervisory Board of TRW Automotive GmbH, the ZF subsidiary at the divisional headquarters in Alfdorf (Germany). After completing a doctorate at the Technical University of Graz (Austria) in 2004 and an MBA in St. Gallen and Lausanne in Switzerland, he began his career at TRW in Austria and moved to the USA in 2007. He was globally responsible for the seat belt product line for four years and later became head of the occupant safety systems product line in Europe in 2013. Following the TRW acquisition by ZF in 2015, he was appointed General Manager for the global occupant safety systems business.
