For more than 100 years, the powertrain has determined the shape of the body and the way it has developed. The engine and gearbox have generally been located at the front of the car and the fuel tank at the back. With the increasing introduction of electric powertrains, this picture is changing. Battery packs of varying sizes, electric drive motors on the front or rear axles or both, increasingly stringent crash safety standards, and ongoing weight reductions are leading to radical changes in body design. Modular systems of different kinds are being introduced to make the best possible use of economies of scale. In addition, more and more suppliers are developing complete units consisting of the chassis and electric motors. Established carmakers and start-ups alike simply have to add their own bodies to these. …
