Zusammenfassung

Sequenzstratigraphie ist ein Sammelbegriff für verschiedene Methoden, die primär unabhängig von biostratigraphischen oder radiologischen Altersdatierungen eine zeitliche Unterteilung der sedimentären Ablagerungsgeschichte ermöglichen. Sie basiert im Wesentlichen auf geometrischen Lagebeziehungen, charakteristischen Ablagerungsmustern und ihrer Korrelation. Diese Merkmale definieren sich wiederholende, genetisch zusammengehörende Ablagerungseinheiten, die teils durch Erosionsflächen, teils durch Flächen ohne Ablagerung begrenzt sind.
