Steel is the most widely used metallic alloy, and its production (in the world) is more than fifty times the total production of all other metals combined. That is why iron and steel form one group (i.e. ferrous metals), and other metal combinations (except iron) form another group (i.e. non-ferrous metals). India occupies the third position in the world steel's production and will become second in the coming decade. All Metallurgical and Materials Engineering Departments in technical colleges/institutes, particularly in India, have teaching programs in ironmaking and steelmaking. During the past three and a half decades, many advances have been made in the implementation of new technologies in the ironmaking and steelmaking. These technical advances have been reflected also on the curriculum given at the technical colleges/institutes. This textbook covers almost all the important basic concepts, derivations and numerical for undergraduate and graduate engineering students in simple and easy to understand formats.
