Fluid flows obey conservation laws such as conservations of mass and momentum. Such conservation laws can be used to obtain a set of differential equations, namely, the continuity equation and the Navier-Stokes equation for description of fluid flows. These equations form a mathematical model for general fluid flows which are introduced in this chapter. Since a full solution of the Navier-Stokes equation for turbulent flows is generally beyond the power of the present computer, the subgrid-scale stress model is incorporated into the flow equations for turbulent flows. Based on the governing equations for general fluid flows, the shallow water equations are derived in detail, which is the mathematical model for shallow water flows.
