Field applications in process control and manufacturing are experiencing a trend towards modularization and distribution of functionality across available computing and communication resources. Function blocks have become a widely accepted technique to describe distributed applications. The paper defines an abstract function block model which supports common execution policies. The model is described from the view point of simulation tools which are a valuable aid in assessing the dynamic behaviour of a distributed system. The main characteristics of the simulation tool OOST of the Fraunhofer Institute IITB are mentioned.
