This paper presents the results of simulation study of unbalanced flow line production systems. Effects of several line unbalancing policies on the production efficiency and inprocess inventory have been examined. The results indicate that a balanced line is generally the most efficient. However, for small lines with limited interstage buffer capacities, arrangement with middle stages slightly faster than the outer, leads to improved efficiency. When the variabilities in operation times differ from stage to stage, for maximum efficiency, less work load should be assigned to the stages with high variability.
