Site fidelity of harbor seals in Casco Bay, ME, USA using facial recognition technology: a pilot study

Abstract

Der Artikel untersucht die Standorttreue und Konnektivität von Hafenrobben in Casco Bay, ME, USA, mittels Gesichtserkennungstechnologie. Die Studie konzentriert sich auf das Abschleppverhalten von Robben, das für ihre Thermoregulierung und Energieeinsparung entscheidend ist. Durch die Analyse von Fotos von Seehunden an neun verschiedenen Abschleppstellen über einen Zeitraum von drei Jahren haben die Forscher die Software SealNet eingesetzt, um einzelne Seehunde zu identifizieren und ihre Bewegungen zu verfolgen. Die Ergebnisse liefern Einblicke in die jährliche und saisonale Standorttreue von Seehunden, die Vernetzung zwischen Fangplätzen und die lokale Häufigkeit von Seehunden in der Middle Bay. Darüber hinaus hebt die Studie das Potenzial der Gesichtserkennungstechnologie als nichtinvasive und effiziente Methode zur Langzeitüberwachung von Meeressäugern hervor, die einen bedeutenden Fortschritt gegenüber herkömmlichen invasiven Techniken darstellt.
