Abstract

There is a paucity of empirical research on the sociocultural impacts of roads. Even though there is a growing acknowledgement by donors, INGOs, NGOs, and government institutions that this is an important component of infrastructure planning, development, and implementation, sociocultural impacts are hard to quantify. Some sociocultural impacts may not manifest until years after the project is complete. This situation is greatly exacerbated in culturally diverse countries such as Nepal. In Nepal this has lead to instances of theft, illegal trade and smuggling, violence, and community conflicts. This was documented on both the Marsyangdi Highway and Kali Ghandaki Highway where changes to cultural traditions, intentional road blockades, and social unrest were all observed.
