The soils of the Brahmaputra River basin are similar to the soils found in the Indo--Gangetic plains. These soils are classified according to the soil taxonomy and represent widely divergent soil groups. Climate has been the most dominant factor in formation and development of soils of the basin. More specifically, the rainfall and temperature have exercised the most conspicuous influence. Introducing the characteristics of these soils, the land classification is described. Then their influence on agricultural productivity is treated.
