The process of wire electrode EDM uses a travelling wire as a trepanning tool and represents an important development in EDM technology. In this paper the effects of the different variables of wire electrode EDM on process efficiency are studied without including numerical control considerations. It is found that stability of the wire is perhaps the most important factor controlling process efficiency. Whilst previous analyses have studied wire electrodes under the influence of periodic disturbing forces, it is postulated herein that, for a relaxation type power supply, the influence of wire vibration on the process is controlled by the transverse displacement between discharges. Various process factors, such as wire tension and flushing, are examined in the light of this concept to obtain a better understanding of the process.
